Maitake mushrooms very well have originated in the mountain forests of Northeastern Japan, but are found in North America as well. Along with being called the “Dancing Mushroom”, they have also been called the “Phantom Mushroom” due to their difficulty to find in the wild.
Maitake in the Wild
These mushrooms can be difficult to spot since they typically do not grow out in the open on the forest floor. Maitake prefer dead leaves and organic debris to help shade them from sunlight. Their growth in clusters and brownish color further camouflage their presence.
